Exhibition Graphics
Natalie Ball: biwi naats Ga’niipci: The title translates to “We smell like the outside.” I took inspiration from the materials in Natalie Ball's work, creating a panel out of plywood and suspending it using a roped wire. The projection translates Natalie Ball's Maqlaqsyals title to welcome guests into the space. However, the plywood panel flips guests into the role of an outsider by emphasizing the Maqlaqsyals text over the English and Spanish translations.
Rose B. Simpson: Counterculture: The typography is inspired by the title, with the text on countering sides of the panel.
Edges of Ailey: I designed graphics for interactive tablets, placed alongside the vitrines as a way of exploring the show’s extensive archival materials.
Mabel Dwight: Cool Head, Warm Heart: We used signpainting as a way to connect to Mabel Dwight’s era (b. 1876, d. 1955), while still feeling contemporary.
